Why I am not able to upload my InDesign file? I keep getting Error 12 and Soap 1.1

You may see an error message pop up in a dialog box within InDesign while attempting to upload a new or existing template to eDocBuilder. The text of the error message may contain a line like this: "The byte 0x13 is not valid at this location." Note: the numbers or text may be different on the exact error you see, but this is still the same type of error.

There can be several reasons behind this error. It is a somewhat generic indication of failure, caused by a myriad of complications. Examples are:

  • Improper formatting of text added to the form fields while creating it in InDesign, such as the presence of non-ASCII Unicode characters in the field names or prompts. To correct this, ensure these text strings are plain text. You can try copying and pasting the text into a text-only program, such as Notepad, then copying and pasting it back into InDesign.
As a reminder, field names cannot have any spaces, and may only include alphabetical characters (A-Z or a-z). They cannot be duplicated within the same file / template.

  • There are "Image" fields within the InDesign file that are causing an error. Try replacing them with text box fields and attempting the upload again. Once the template has been successfully uploaded to to eDocBuilder, those fields can be easily changed from Text to Image, and the graphics replaced by adding them to your Assets, and assigning them to the fields under the Data Capture tab.
